Captain’s Log: Day #8 of my 30-Day Challenge to write a 500-word article every day for the next 30 days.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of a former colleague and a friend just recently. We were not close but I could say that we were good friends even though most of our conversations at work revolved around the usual hi, hello, as a colleague, I could say that she would be willing to offer a helping hand when in need.

I remember the time when I was going through a tough time in a previous relationship, this person gave words of encouragement and support, and then again when another close friend whom we were workmates with passed away, she was there to give words of solace and comfort.

When you’re feeling down and out, sometimes you have to scrounge whatever support you can get just to get through your day. You can sometimes get away with it by burying yourself in work, or by unwinding and trying to get your mind off the subject.

But eventually, you have to get up and face the situation, work your way through, and try to pull everything together. I realize now, that it’s always valuable to have the company of good friends, people who will support you and be there for you, especially in tough times.

People nowadays can be rude, inconsiderate, and apathetic. If you go through your social media accounts, you’ll find a lot of trolls just spitting out negativity hiding behind the comfort of a keyboard, even though they might not have the guts to say such a thing in front of your face.

That’s why it’s always refreshing when you see someone post a word of encouragement, support, or just something to brighten up your day.

During the pandemic, even up to now, a lot of us might still be dealing with some personal stuff, and so, if you get the opportunity, always be kind. Offer words of encouragement, support, or just a smile. You’ll never know how that might impact another person who’s going through a rough day.

It’s interesting how words can have a huge impact on our minds, whether written or spoken. One nasty word can break your spirit or give you that inner strength to carry on and persevere. That old quote “sticks and stones may break my bones but words could never hurt me” isn’t true after all when you think about it.

Having someone who is just there to hear you out and support you in times of trouble, sadness, and grief can be a big moral boost.

Life can be a fleeting moment, and in an instant, a lot can happen and change. But for what it’s worth, showing an act of kindness will always go a long way. I hope that when you read this, you would be inspired to pass along some kindness, a thought, a word of encouragement, or maybe a smile so that somehow, some way, someone’s day would lighten up and give them a piece of paradise.
