“Why AI is not a Threat to Jobs, but a Catalyst for Innovation”

Captain’s Log: Day #11 of my 30-Day Challenge to write a 500-word article every day for the next 30 days.

Today I shared with my accountability group how you can use AI for your business.

AI has been the talk of the town for the past several weeks or months now. And if you’ve witnessed how very useful it can be, you’ll probably be mind-blown as to what it can do.

But on the other hand, there have also been doubts and fears about the rise of AI and I get it. From a business standpoint, if you can be more efficient using a tool then you wouldn’t require human intervention plus fewer mistakes.

However, as history has proven, nobody can exactly predict the future. I’m probably among those who have hyped AI before the pandemic. Just take a look at this post:

This post was made 5 years ago. I would dare say that because of the pandemic, the need for contactless operations or services has risen. Just imagine the growth spurt of internet companies to accommodate work-from-home volume requirements.

However, let’s dissect this video real quick.

It’s now 2023. And I still see some call centers hiring here in the Philippines. Even with the pandemic, we’ve hardly heard of some call centers closing down and retrenching their workers.

There’s still a lot of stuff to be invented, and that includes the flying DeLorean and hoverboard. But the point I’m driving at is, even with the current technology and given how fast it is progressing, we still cannot predict the future accurately.

Chris Orzechowski, a leading email marketer even had a crazy experiment on Chat GPT which he shows on his tweet, check this out:

I’m also waiting and following to see what happens with it. 😁

But here is one thing that is true and has tons of evidence. New technology breeds jobs.

Take for example the car. Sure it probably annihilated the carriage industry, although in Manila there are still “Kalesas” for tourist attractions, but when the car arrived, there was a need for manufacturing jobs to make the car. There is a need for people to teach how to drive the car, a need for people to maintain the car, a need for people to maintain roads for cars, you get the drift right?

And that is just one piece of technology. Imagine computers, nobody goes to typists anymore to get their letters and projects typewritten on a typewriter machine anymore. But we do have computer technicians, programmers, and all the other jobs related to building and maintaining a computer.

The real thing that you need to ask yourself is, what are you doing to improve so you don’t get obsolete even with the new technology coming out? There will always be a need for people because let’s face it, people love interacting with other humans, except for some who are extremely introverted, but human connection will always be needed. And also because the Morlocks haven’t evolved yet.

So instead of focusing on fear, focus on the possibilities, focus on what you can improve — yourself. And by doing so, you will be able to make yourself invaluable regardless of the job market climate or the status of the economy.

Have a great weekend!
